EMLL held a #1 contenders tournament for a shot at the NWA World Middleweight Championship.

This was a single elimination tournament held over multiple weeks. The size and the length of the tournament is unknown. It appears the tournament was held over multiple weeks, starting perhaps in early April

• Benny Galant arrived to the semifinal somehow.
• El Santo defeated Rene Guajardo on April 19 in Arena Mexico in the other semifinal
• Benny Galant upset El Santo on on April 24 in Arena Mexico in the final

Galant would go on to defeat Rayo de Jalisco to win the championship.
