Mr. Águila debuted on January 3, 1994.  In 1997, at the age of 19, he was signed by the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) and was added to their Light Heavyweight division. He wrestled under a mask as Águila, and even took on Taka Michinoku for the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XIV.  He did not defeat Michinoku for the championship, but put on an impressive showing nonetheless.
Super rookie who was already in CMLL at age 20. Signed by WWF in 1998 when that promotion wanted to create a light heavyweight division. WWF planned to use him as an unmasked wrestler, so Aguila dropped his mask to Ultimo Guerrero before leaving the promotion. The WWF division never took off, but Aguila stuck with the US promotion for many years under a couple of different gimmicks, usually as an enhancement talent.

Eventually, he returned mask-less as Papi Chulo, and made an appearance in ECW (while still contracted to WWE) at Cyberslam 1999 against Taka Michinoku. He once again failed to defeat Taka Michinoku, but was an impressive showing nonetheless. It must have impressed WWF management, because he was repackaged as Essa Rios and won the WWF World Light Heavyweight Championship in his "debut" match against Gillberg on February 8, 2000.   He lost the championship to Dean Malenko on March 13, 2000 and feuded with the Hardy Boys (over Lita) and Chyna before his release in 2001, which was rumored to be over Águila's refusal to learn how to speak English. At Backslash 2000 Aguila went for the European Champion, but fail and lost the match to Eddie Guerrero.
Returned to Mexico full time around 2002, spending most of his time in AAA, including another run in a US promotion as part of AAA's X-Cup team. Jumped back to CMLL in 2005, quickly becoming a part of Perro Aguayo Jr.'s popular rudo Perros del Mal group. Aguila was part of the group who left CMLL to form Perros del Mal as a regular promotion. In 2010, with Perros del Mal talking to AAA about joining with that promotion, Aguila gave his notice and returned to CMLL. Aguila was introduced as a member of The Invasors, ex-AAA and Indepedent wrestlers working together (as rudos) to prove they were as good as CMLL luchadors.

After his release from WWE, Mr. Águila began accepting bookings for Japan and would end up competiting in several matches for TNA from January-July 2004, as part of the Team Mexico faction in the World X-Division Cup.
Aguila's still a talented wrestler, and a forerunner of the style the masked tecnicos are using in CMLL now. In his last CMLL run, especially near the end, Aguila looked great in the ring. He's looked out of shape on this run, and often wrestled in a heavy vest to hide his size.

He is currently competing in Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL).
