Current Champion

Rayo de Jalisco Jr., 14th Champion

Rayo de Jalisco Jr. is the last known champion. While the WWA is an existing promotional body - most notably running a monthly in Tijuana show - Rayo and this championship are not strongly bound to the group. It's effectively an independent championship.

Rayo was scheduled to possibly defend this championship as part of a four champion relevos increíbles match on February 23rd, 2008, but no-showed the event. Nicho took his place and lost his title instead, so it's possible Rayo was planned to lose the title and opted to not show up to avoid that. In April, magazine Luchas 2000 reported the WWA had stripped Rayo of this championship, but there's been no confirmation from any other source and the WWA has not made any effort to determine a new champion. Rayo surely still has the physical belt and probably will continue to defend it.

History of Championship

This WWA World Heavyweight Championship is the revival of the old WWA (Los Angeles) World Heavyweight title which started in 1958 when Edouard Carpentier defeated NWA World Heavyweight Champion Lou Thesz but was not awarded the NWA belt due to a technicality. In 1968, however, the WWA promotion rejoined the NWA and the WWA belt was abandoned.

The WWA revival was done around Bill Anderson, a former rookie in the NWA Los Angeles promotion which closed in 1982.
