A tournament was held for the (long) vacant Mexican National Featherweight Championship in 1980. Only the final three matches are known; it's likely more rounds were held.

This championship was essentially restarted; the previous champion passed away in 1941 and the title was forgotten. It was the first 'new' championship since Promociones Mora started as its own group. The Mexico City commission made a point of including wrestlers from various promotions big and small in the tournament; eventually winner Voltio Negro was representing the Fraternidad del Santo group.
