Shocker was stripped of the NWA World Light Heavyweight Championship in May 2011. He'd been inactive since a week after he won the title, suffering a knee injury on a dive.

This tournament includes 16 luchadors and will take place entirely in Arena Mexico. The luchadors have been split up into two blocks of eight. The blocks themselves will be split into half by tecnico/rudo lines, setting up a four versus four cibernetico. The final survivor from each block will meet in a singles match for the vacant title.
