Rey de Reyes is an annual AAA tournament. The winner has received a championship crown at times. Rarely, they defend the crown, but mostly it's just a trophy for winning the tournament.
Rey de Reyes was created as a 16 man tournament with four way matches. In recent years, it's changed forms multiple times. 2011's tournament was won by Extreme Tiger and returned to the traditional format, though spread out over multiple weeks.

1997
The first Rey de Reyes tournament was held at el Centro de Convenciones, Madero, Tamaulipas on 1997.02.21. Latin Lover was the winner.
1998
The 2nd Rey de Reyes tournament was heled at El Torero, Naucalpan, on 1998.03.01. Octagon was the winner.
1999
The 3rd edition of Rey de Reyes, held at El Torero in Naucalpan on 1999.03.07, was won by Cibernetico.
2000
The 4th edition of Rey de Reyes, held at El Torero in Naucalpan on 2000.03.05, was won by Abismo Negro.
On 2001.02.17, Abismo Negro defended his Rey de Reyes crown versus Cibernetico's AAA Camepon de Camepon Championship, and lost. Cibernetico won the physical crown, but it's unclear if he became Rey de Reyes.
2001
The 5th edition of Rey de Reyes, held at el Centro de Convenciones, Madero, Tamaulipas on 2001.03.30, was won by La Parka Jr.
La Parka Jr. and Cibernetico teased a feud over the crown Cibernetico has previously won from Abismo, but no match for it was ever held.
2002
The 6th edition of Rey de Reyes, held at Auditorio Benito Juárez de Zapopan, Jalisco on 2002.03.17, was won by Canek
2003
The 7th edition of Rey de Reyes, held at Auditorio Benito Juárez de Zapopan, Jalisco on 2003.03.16, was won by La Parka Jr.
This year, the preliminary match was between the six previous winners:
Latin Lover (1997), Octagon (1998), Cibernetico (1999) versus Abismo Negro (2000), La Parka Jr. (2001), and Canek (2002). Abismo's team won, so the final was a singles match between La Parka Jr. and Abismo Negro. (It's unclear why Canek didn't advance.) La Parka Jr. won the singles match to take the title for a second time.
2004
Jeff Jarrett won the 2004 Rey de Reyes. There was no tournament this year, only a one on one match held on 2004.03.21 at Toreo de Cuatro Caminos, Naucalpan. Jeff Jarrett defeated Latin Lover in the tournament.
Reigning champion La Parka Jr. could not participate in the tournament due to a Abismo Negro related neck injury. At first, AAA did not consider this an 'official' Rey de Reyes, but Jarrett has been included consistently in recent years.
2005
The 8th edition of Rey de Reyes, held at el Centro de Convenciones, Madero, Tamaulipas on 2005.03.11, was won by La Parka Jr.. It was a six way match, including Latin Lover, Konnan, Jeff Jarrett, Chessman and Abismo Negro. Parka was awarded the victory not by defeating anyone, but because all (besides Latin Lover) attacked him and pulled off his mask, causing a disqualification.
2006
The 9th edition of Rey de Reyes, held at el Centro de Convenciones, Madero, Tamaulipas on March 10 was won by Vampiro. This year's edition was included four trio teams in one elimination match
- AAA: Vampiro, Octagon, La Parka Jr.
- Guapo: Shocker, Scorpio Jr., Zumbido
- Sect Cibernetica: Cibernetico, Chessman, Muerte Cibernetica
- TNA: Konnan, Ron Killings, Samoa Joe
Wrestlers were individually eliminated as the match went on, leaving Vampiro and Cibernetico as the final two. La Parka Jr. intefered, hitting Cibernetico with a chair, helping his partner win the match.
2007
The 10th edition of Rey de Reyes was held at El Toreo De Naucalpan on March 18th. This year's edition was a six man elimination match. Wrestlers were grouped together, but it was essentially a one on one match with six wrestlers.
Parka, Abismo and Rhyno were the final three. Parka evaded Rhyno's Gore, which hit Abismo instead. Abismo was pinned and eliminated. Rhyno later charged Parka again, Parka moved again, and Rhyno ran into a chair. La Parka Jr. cradled him to win the championship and become a four time winner. He was given a sword as a trophy.
2008
The 11th edition of Rey de Reyes marked a return to the traditional 16 men in four way matches style. The tournament was held in Plaza de Toros Monumental Lorenzo Garza, Monterrey, Nuevo León, on March 16 and won by Zorro.
2009
The 12th edition of Rey de Reyes was held in Plaza de Toros Nuevo Progreso, Guadalajara on March 15. Electroshock won this year's tournament, and went on to challenge the for the AAA World Heavyweight Championship the following year.
2010
The 13th edition of Rey de Reyes was held in Queretaro for the first time, at the Plaza de Toros Santa Maria on March 12. The format changed again this year, becoming a 12 man field with three finalists. There were no qualifying matches. 11 participants were announced at once, and TNA representative Hernandez was announced the week before the event.

2011
The 14th edition of Rey de Reyes tournament is hold in Aguascalientes, at the Plaza de Toros Monumental on March 18. First round fourways were held on various AAA TV tapings leading up to the show.
2012
The 15th edition of Rey de Reyes tournament was held in three locations. The first two semifinals took place on February 23 in Arena Naucalpan. The second two semifinals took place on March 10th in Gimnasio Augstin Milan in Toluca. The final was at Auditorio Benito Juarez, Zapopan, Jalisco, on March 18. It was won by Perro Aguayo Jr..
2013
The 15th edition of the Rey de Reyes tournament will take place on March 17, 2013 in Plaza de Toros Monumental, Monterrey. This year's format has three groups of six luchadors, with the winners facing off later in the date. The first member of Group A and the third of Group C were not revealed on the official lineup.

The 17th edition of Rey de Reyes tournament is being held on various television tapings, with the final taking place at the Rey de Reyes, 2014 event. It's believed to be a return to the four block sixteen luchador setup, but the full field and format have not been announced.
